ABSTRACT
Urban sprawl is the most challenging effect of man’s activities on the environment; man tends to move from region of low socio-economic activities
(Rural areas) to region of high and increasing socio-economic activities. Abuja which lies within Latitude 9o251N and 9o201N of the equator and longitude 5o251E
and 7o391E of the Greenwich meridian have experience influx of people since 1991 after the movement of the federal capital territory to the region. This increase has not only affect the plan of the city which was initially for few administrative personnel but has also affected the environment; the water quality, hydrological regime even the economy. Abuja being the capital city of Nigeria attracts a lot of population and industries, hence that affects the water usage which pose a lot of effect on the water quality and hydrological regime. Urbanization is the changes in man’s interests, activities and values, and appearing to have related to increasing functional specialization in human societies, while industrialization is rapid or gradual increase in the industrial activities of a place, these affect a city in several ways but also enhance development of a place. The effect of urbanization and industrialization is X – rayed in this work using the water analysis results from different part of the Abuja Metropolis and the mechanisms of the hydrologic regime (how the anthropogenic activities affect it). Discussions were made and recommendation given.
